AMITY INSTITUTE OF GEOINFORMATICS AND REMOTE SENSING (AIGIRS)

Academic Advantage

The programs of M.Tech/M.Sc. in Geo-Informatics and Remote Sensing, M.Sc. in Geo-Informatics and Remote Sensing,M.Sc. in Applied Geology and B.Sc. in Geoinformatics are designed to cater for the needs of upcoming scenarios and challenges of the various research and commercial organizations. We believe that the students who earn the degree would be well equipped with software and hardware skills. The programs also aims to provide consultancy, solutions and future trends in the areas of Land use & Land cover, Agriculture & Forest, Snow & Ice, Climate change, Hydrology, Oceanography, Geology and a range of relevant state-of-the-art technologies.

The study programs in GIS and Remote Sensing are also the building stones of various indigenous capacities for the development and utilization of space science and technology. The benefits of space technology, both direct and indirect, have introduced new dimensions into the study and understanding of Earth’s processes and in improving the quality of life for the people living on it. These programs consist of two/three years of academic training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area, along with a professional component that may include internships and "cross-training" in workplace skills, such as business, communications, and regulatory affairs. All have been developed in concert with employers and are designed to dovetail into present and future professional career opportunities.

These program in Amity focuses on applied Earth Science teaching & research ranging from fundamental geology to exploration of natural resources, natural hazards & mitigation strategies at master degree level. These courses provides sound training in the core theory and the lab & field work added with the application of GIS & RS facilities for mapping of earth’s resources which include natural water resources, mineral & petroleum exploration and geological mapping of surface and subsurface. Students will learn about the Earth and its materials (rocks, minerals), structure & processes. This encompasses rock-cycle, movement of continents & opening of ocean basin (plate-tectonics), volcanoes, earthquakes, life through the earth’s history (paleontology), hydrosphere (groundwater) and exploration of earth resources (groundwater, metallic & non-metallic ores, petroleum, coal, geothermal energy). These courses includes credit based field excursion each year. Field work are closely linked with the studies covered in class room lectures and undergo field data collection, mapping and analysis in the different areas.

These all course are an interdisciplinary program designed to facilitate students' pursuit of an advanced degree with training in the Geographic Information Sciences, while simultaneously developing business skills highly valued by potential employers. Experiences provided by the faculty in the classroom, laboratory and field will prepare the student for internship opportunities. Each experience will form a basis for the degree requirements of the program as well as for preparing the successful graduate to address the documented local and regional workforce needs in business, government and non-profit sectors.

Scope

In a competitive job marketplace, a Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (MSc) and Bachelor of Science provides a specialized education that qualifies graduates for a number of unique and high-paying career opportunities. Usually taken as a continuation of a Bachelor of Science, an MSc provides students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of their field and increase their value as employees. These degree courses utilizes information science as the framework to capture, process, and display spatial data. For prospective students interested in the intersection of digital technology and geographic science, this degree provides an educational background that can be practically applied in both the private and public sectors. With an increasingly growing demand for individuals trained in computer science, geoinformatics provides technical training in digital tools that makes graduates relevant in a competitive job marketplace. These courses teaches highly specialized and sought-after skills used in a variety of fields.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing as a state of art technology and upcoming field of science concerns with generation, maintenance and utilization of geographical, cartographic data and terrain information in the best possible manner. The growing awareness about its application has thrown open a large number of jobs for GIS and Remote Sensing professionals in the fields of mining defence, forest research, oil and mineral exploration, public works, tourism, architecture and construction firms and many more. As a GIS and Remote Sensing professional one can work as an analyst/consultant/manager/developer/trainer/map developer and technician. Many public and private company employee professionals with experience in GIS and Remote Sensing at different levels. The job potential in this field is immense. The experience will make one a specialist in this upcoming and niche field and will be useful if GIS and Remote Sensing is the choosing area of work. The service of GIS and Remote Sensing professionals is becoming more important as more demands for geospatial data handling are emerging due to the rapid growth of the country’s development. The graduates of this programme can expect a very good future in their career and can always play their role in fulfilling such demands.
