M.Pharm. (Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry) Programme :

Details of the Program

Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry deals with standardization of medicinal plants & extraction, isolation, purification, characterization and identification of phytoconstituents. The Students will get an opportunity to learn the techniques of isolation, purification and characterization of phytoconstituents by various sophisticated chromatographic techniques like TLC, HPLC, HPTLC and GC etc. They will also be trained in various spectral techniques like UV, IR, NMR & Mass Spectroscopy. The students will also learn to develop effective herbal formulations & cosmetics by bioactivity guided fractionation. The programme will also provide a sound knowledge of plant tissue culture techniques, agro technology etc.

Programme Focus

The programme focus is on the utility of natural products in the present day scenario. The programme covers all the leading subjects related to natural products like Recent advances in Pharmacognosy especially in the area of medicinal plants used as anti-cancer agents, anti-diabetic agents, hepataoprotective drugs, plants as an adaptogens and immunomodulators and also subjects like Phytochemistry, Industrial Pharmacognosy, Standardization of medicinal plants etc. The programme also covers subjects like DRA & IPR, Modern Analytical Techniques (UV, IR, NMR, MASS, HPLC etc), Pharmaceutical Biostatistics & Computer applications, which makes the programme unique in its kind.

The student will be doing a major laboratory-based project in the emerging areas of Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry & natural products. Project duration will be for one year with synopsis formulation, review of literature and protocol standardization, major experimentation. The possible outcome will be patent, publications, thesis or dissertation etc.
