SPIC MACAY: THE DIVINE DANCE DRAMA!

On 28th September 10, Amity, Pushp Vihar organized a Mohiniattam dance performance to the accompaniment of musical instruments by a team from SPIC MACAY. It was headed by Ms. Deepti Omcherry Bhalla, a renowned dancer who has specialized in Mohiniattam. The show began after a warm welcome and lighting of the lamp ceremony.

Mrs. Bhalla is an excellent speaker who began with a detailed explanation of Mohiniattam, a dance form indigenous to Kerala. She told the students that it is originally a solo dance, which reflects nature’s beauty in keeping with a devotional theme.

Mrs. Bhalla reverently introduced each musical instrument and musician accompanying her. First she described the MRIDANGAM being, played by Metri Bhupathe. “Mrid refers to earth & angam refers to body, thus making MRIDANGAM, and instrument shaped out of earth, and taler, carved out of wood. It resembles a drum with left board for providing with rhythm and the right board with the purpose of resonance.

Next she described the veena, a stringed instrument, played by Mrs. Geeta Mohan. It is generally associated with Goddess Saraswati who plucks the strings to produce different notes. The structure basically is a long stem attached to a ½ bowl called kudamb to which strings are fretted.

Lastly she went on to explain ALAKYA, a double cone like instrument attached to 64 balls held by 4 pegs symbolizing Vedas, the 64 arts in the world. Due to a devotional Hindu Trinity appear, it is prohibited from being kept on the ground.
