One-day National workshop on “Conservation of Natural Resources and Indian Culture”, at Amity School of Natural Resources & Sustainable Development, Sector 125, Noida, on 16th May, 2008.

Anxiety and concern of the government about welfare of the socially and economically deprived persons on the one hand and conservation of natural resources on the other has been a matter of great debate in the country. We have a large number of developmental programmes for conservation of natural resources but most of these lack in-depth impact of local culture and indigenous knowledge on prevalent conservation practices.

Our culture, however, binds people together and gives them a sense of belonging and ownership. Since time immemorial mankind has lived in the cradle of nature and made efforts to conserve it through certain cultural practices which almost always had a scientific base. The idea of worshipping certain plants, trees and animals in our mythology infact relates to conservation of biodiversity.

However, in the current scenario participation of the concerned people is often over looked while resolving environmental issues at government policy and programme level. The cultural aspects do not receive due importance while drawing out intervention for development and natural resource management programme.
