Affirmative Counselling Practice With LGBTQ Clients

A full day workshop was conducted from 11.00 AM to 5.00 PM at Amity Institute of Behavioural and Allied Sciences for Masters Students of the department. The workshop covered theoretical perspective on gender and sexuality and various therapeutic skills used with LGBTQ population. A paradigm shift took place in the workshop through various discussions, debate and brain storming sessions. The purpose of the workshop was to enable students to learn about various concepts like gender, sexuality, sexual preferences and identities and to become aware about various concerns of LGBTQ clients. Various questions which were pondered on during workshop were: What is gay affirmative counselling practice? The questions which was covered in the session were what are unique life stressors that face LGBTQ populations? What are the tenets to do affirmative practice? Actual case discussions in small groups to practice using the perspectives and tenets. Students were sensitized about various mental health issues which clients from LGBTQ community may face.
