A Faculty Development Program on ‘Nursing Theories’ was organized by Amity College of Nursing, Amity University Gurugram on 3rd July 2018. Dr. Smriti Arora Tarafdar, Professor, Holy Family Hospitals was invited as a ‘Resource Person’ for the event.

Professor Pranati Barua, Principal, Amity College of Nursing inaugurated the FDP Program. During her inaugural remarks, she reiterated the fact that in the past few years, Nursing has been established as a valued profession and also as an educational discipline. She also said that nursing has earned the reputation of being an organized profession rather than just a vocation; by shifting the focus of nursing training to a more theory based practice.

Dr. Smriti Arora began her session by delivering a comprehensive overview of important theories and shared that lately, the need has been felt for a knowledge-based guide for nursing profession. Nursing theories provide frameworks for nursing interventions as well as predict outcomes.  Dr. Arora delivered a talk on the topic- ‘Conceptual Models and Framework’. She explained the concepts in a lucid way that enabled the audience to gain a good understanding of the topic.

Post Dr. Arora’s session, there was an interactive session on the topic ‘Betty Neuman Healthcare System Model’ which had inputs from Mr. Naveena J.H., Assistant Professor, ACON.

Next was a talk on Orem’s Self Care Deficit Theory which was delivered by Ms Manita Dalal, Assistant Professor, ACON. Ms. Manita explained the theory using research examples and case sheets of patients. There were two other highly informative sessions – One by Prof. Sheuli Sen on Sister Calista Roy’s Adaptation Model and another one by Ms Poonam Sharma, Assistant Professor, ACON, on the ‘Challenges in Application of Nursing Theories.’
