WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY & WORLD HABITAT DAY CELEBRATIONS

Amity School of Architecture & Planning, Amity University Rajasthan celebrated “WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY” on Monday, 1st of October 2018.

In the year 1986, the International Union of Architects (UIA) established the World Architecture Day to be celebrated around the world. It is traditionally celebrated every year on the first Monday in October to coincide with the United Nations World Habitat Day, under the theme "Architecture... for a Better World".The United Nations has also designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day.The theme for World Habitat Day 1 October 2018 is Municipal Solid Waste Management. The purpose of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

World Habitat Day was established in 1985 by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/202, and was first celebrated in 1986.By choosing a different theme for reflection each year, World Architecture Day & World Habitat Day aims to draw the attention of professionals and the public to, issues concerning cities and housing.

World Architecture Day is a day to show appreciation for the work of architects and to celebrate some of the great global architectural works.

Architecture is incredibly important and architects have the potential to shape all of our lives through their hard work. In addition, architecture plays an essential role in planning for the future, sustaining population growth and tackling a number of social problems.

This year Amity School of Architecture & Planning, Amity University Rajasthan very aptly had a screening of a documentary on the retrospective exhibition of Architect Balkrishna Doshi, who is the first and only architect to have won the Pritzker Award in 2018.

The World Architecture Day event began with welcoming of our chief guest Prof Arun Patil, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Rajasthan and other dignitaries by the Dean & Director, Faculty of Architecture & Planning, Prof (Dr) Jitendra Singh.

Prof Jitendra Singh, a senior and noteworthy architect in the Architectural fraternity of India, began the event by throwing light on World Architecture Day & World Habitat Day and spoke about the theme ‘Architecture for a Better World’. Prof Singh also reminded us that the theme for this year’s world habitat day ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management’ was in line with our Hon Prime Ministers vision of a Clean India through the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’.

The students and faculty at Amity University was enlightened by his speech on aiming to highlight and remind the world of the architecture's collective responsibility in designing the world's future cities and settlements.

The event followed with an inspiring and thought provoking speech by Prof Arun Patil, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Rajasthan on the role of Architects in society and the collective responsibility of Architects to ‘Create a better World’ by focusing on Economics, Environment, Sustainability parameters but at the same time respecting the Social strata of a country like India.

The event continued with an inspiring Documentary on the Retrospective Exhibition of Architect Balkrishna Doshi titled ‘Celebrating Habitat’. It was screened at an appropriate occasion to reflect on the sixty years of Prof Doshi’s career by providing glimpses of experiences through selected projects by him. Doshi was also honoured with the Pritzker Prize in Architecture 2018 this year and it was truly inspiring for both students and faculty of Amity University to witness his journey in Architecture through this documentary.

Doshi emphasized on the fact that Architecture should have a much deeper meaning and should connect to people.

 

The event concluded by a thought provoking note by Prof Singh.
