Amity School of Languages, organized a seminar on the topic ‘Translation in Medieval India’ on 9th August 2018. The talk was delivered by Dr Amit Ranjan, Faculty at NCERT, Fulbright Faculty in Residence at Florida International University, Miami, USA.
The aim of the seminar was to throw light on the historical perspective of translation and to make people aware about the contributions of Leonard Cohen, a great Canadian poet, songwriter and singer through his poem.
Prof. Ashok Kumar Tiku, HoD, Amity School of Language welcomed Dr. Amit Ranjan and introduced him to the august gathering. He shared that Dr Ranjan would be soon traveling as a Fulbright scholar to Florida International University where he would be setting up a new South Asian Centre.
During his illustrious career, Dr. Ranjan has taught at various reputed institutes like JNU, Jamia Milia, DU etc.
Dr Ranjan began his session with the introduction of the history of translation and explained how the use of language helps in the interpretation of history. He continued his lecture on the topic of “ Dare Dara Disturb the Universe: Dara Shikoh and his translation of Words and Worldviews” followed by poetry recitation session.
The session provided great insight on how the language can be used objectively to decode history. The session was followed by a brief question and answer session during which there was an interesting discussion amongst faculty members and students. Dr. Ranjan concluded his session with recitation of the poem “Find Me, Leonard Cohen -I am Almost Thirty”, a collection of sixty-one poems majorly inspired by the great poet and singer Leonard Cohen from Canada.
