John completed Ph.D. from Oxford University and went to The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, to work with Professor K. B. Sharpless. In 2007 he moved to the University of Nottingham as an Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry. In 2017, John was promoted to Professor of Organic Chemistry at Institute of Molecular Science, University of La Trobe, Melbourne.
