National Talent Search Scheme is a flagship activity of the NCERT started in the year 1963. The purpose of the scheme was to identify talented students and nurture their talent. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself in a high level of performance in one or more specialized areas. It honours and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. For the courses in Basic Sciences, Social Sciences and Commerce, this assistance is provided up to Ph.D. level. For professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law this assistance is given only up to Post Graduation. In the selection year 2012-2013, the NCERT conducted the National Talent Search Examination for students studying in Class X only.

The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a National Level scholarship program in India. Students studying in Class X are eligible to appear for the selection process. As it is organized by an official body (NCERT), it is widely regarded as the most prestigious examination at high school level in India. For more details of NTSE, students can visit www.ncert.nic.in

NTSE is one of the oldest and most prestigious scholarship exams in India. An NTSE scholar commands tremendous respect in the society. Around 1000 NTSE Scholars are finally awarded scholarships based on Stage – II. It honours and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. The scholarships under the present scheme are awarded to the candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to second-degree level subject to the fulfillment of the conditions.

  1. Student studying in Class – X
  2. Minimum 55% marks in IX standard for general.
  3. 50% marks in IX standard for SC,ST and Physically challenged.

NOTE: The Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar announced the decision to introduce quotas for students belonging to the Other Backward Classes in the NTSE scheme. The union minister also suggested increasing the total number of scholarships from 1000 to 2000. The cabinet is also considering increasing the scholarship amount to Rs. 5000 in the next couple of years. Being an NTSE scholar is a lifetime achievement, which is also considered as a certificate of merit and appreciation during job interview. In a major relief to the aspirants, the Center has approved the inclusion of OBC Quota in the NTSE initiative from 2019 onwards earlier this month. Candidates who would be appearing in the NTSE 2019 exam would get the reservation under the OBC quota from second stage examination. Center is also considering increasing the number of scholarships and increasing the amount in a couple of years. NTSE is a national level competitive examination for students with high intellect and talent. The examination grants scholarships to 1000 selected students. Of the 1000 scholarships, 775 are unreserved categories.

MAT (Mental Ability Test) shall contain questions from analogies, series, problem solving, reasoning, classification, figures, coding words, etc. The MAT test checks the candidate's ability to think, reasoning capability of problem solving. LAT (Language Aptitude/Comprehensive Test) shall contain questions from Reading paragraph, Anonyms, Synonyms, Phrases, Idioms, English grammar etc. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) shall contain questions from Science, Mathematics, History, Geography, Political Science and Economics.

Close to one thousand scholarships are awarded for each stage of education. These stages are as follows :

  1. For Class - XI to XII, a scholarship of Rs. 1250/- per month is provided.
  2. For Undergraduates and Postgraduates, a scholarship of Rs. 2000/- per month is provided
  3. For Ph.D, the scholarship amount is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms.

New Rules for NTSE Scholarship Scheme from 2016-17 Session:

  • Awardees have to secure an aggregate of 60% marks or equivalent grade in order to be eligible for scholarship every year.
  • A pass in all subjects for which a student is registered/appeared is necessary.
  • Withdrawal in non-core subjects as per institutional rules of exemption is considered for payment of scholarship.
  • In view of online payment of scholarship to the awardee the stipulated time period is reduced from 24 months to 12 months.
  • Students pursuing diploma or certificate courses will be provided scholarship, provided they are not employed.
  • Examination Schedule:
    Stage I : 1st Sunday of November.
    Stage II: 2nd Sunday of May.
  • Result:
    Stage I : Will be announced by respective Stage Board / Union Territories.
    Stage II: Will be declared by NCERT in the month of September.
  • NTSE 2017-18 Stage-II Examination Date :
    Examination in All States/UTs : 13th May 2018 (Sunday)
    Note : Students (in India, not abroad) don’t need to fill any form for NTSE Stage-II examination. The Roll No and Exam Centre of NTSE Stage-II will be sent to students (who clear NTSE Stage-I)
  • NTSE Exam Fee :
    The exam fee for NTSE Stage-I exam will be notified by State/UT. For NTSE Stage-II examination, no fee is charged by NCERT.
  • NTSE Language Test:
    Marks obtained by the candidates in Language Test will not be counted in their final merit. But 40% to pass is essential.

Qualifying marks for candidates from SC, ST and PH is 32% in each paper and for General category, it is 40% in each paper.

Indian students studying abroad in class X can appear directly for Stage II NTS examination under conditions mentioned in the NTS brochure.

Target NTSE 2019 (For Class X studying students)

Exam Schedule & Pattern:
Objective Paper : There will be two sections (i) SAT (90 Minutes) which will consist of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Social Science and (ii) MAT (45 Minutes) which will consist of questions of Mental Ability with verbal, non-verbal reasoning, (iii) LAT (45 Minutes) which will consist of questions based on English grammar.

How to Register for Admission Test:
Apply on prescribed Application form (collect from nearest Amity School) with two passport size colour photographs, along with a Demand Draft / Pay Order of the Registration Fee of Rs. 1000/- (inclusive of GST).
