Human rights are fundamental to the stability and development of countries all around the world. Great emphasis has been placed on international conventions and their implementation in order to ensure adherence to a universal standard of acceptability. With the advent of globalization and the introduction of new technology, these principles gain importance not only in protecting human beings from the ill-effects of change but also in ensuring that all are allowed a share of the benefits. The impact of several changes in the world today on human rights has been both negative and positive. The United Nation as a mark of respect termed Human Rights as the rights inherent to all human beings regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. On an individualistic manner these rights can be classified as the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more, with an entitlement to everyone without discrimination.
The political and social recognition provided from the United Nations did not seem to be enough leading to the need for further validation, which it received with the passage of the International Human Rights Law. The International Human Rights Law does not only lay down laws and their adherence on the international level but also on the levels of individual states and governments. It specifies the obligations of the government to act in a defined manner for the promotion and the protection of the fundamental freedom of the individual and the groups within its area of administration.
Despite of all these laws, committees and measures by the United Nations, even now human rights is being immensely violated, whether it is the question on an individual’s right to life or that of political social rights. The refugee crisis, attacks on the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community, women, minorities to be named a few are the ones where the basic inheritance of the human rights have been immensely violated.
The discourse of human rights has been taken to be one way of putting people first in place of the hitherto prevalent norm of state level analysis of things, yet when seen in terms of contemporary India and the Indian society, the issue of human rights and its violations seem to be at odds with each other. The recent incidents of violations range from that of mob lynching, LGBTQ right violations, beef bans and turfs in terms of religion. Thus, in the backdrop of such events this seminar aims at addressing these issues, while building relevant measures. Articulating the problems and issues on a higher level amongst a forum of academicians and policy makers will help in the creation of more awareness amongst the participants, comprising of students, the policy makers who represents a wing of change for the bureaucratic and judicial structure of the India.
