A Workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs): Patents, Innovation and Balancing Public Good with Private Gain” was organised by ASCO on 5th May 2025. The event was organized to support activities under the Institution’s Innovation Council and to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students. It aimed to encourage the development of start-up mindsets, promote creativity, and enhance students' understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and IP management.

The event aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), with a specific focus on understanding the world of patents and their significance in protecting innovation. Through real-world examples and case studies, the event sought to strengthen students’ awareness of IPR, support activities under the Institutions Innovation Council, encourage a start-up and entrepreneurial culture, promote an innovation-driven mindset, and enhance understanding of IP management in academic and professional contexts.

The session was delivered by Ms. Chetali Rao, Senior Scientific Researcher and Legal Advisor at Third World Network (TWN), an international non-profit policy research and advocacy organization headquartered in Malaysia. The speaker provided a clear overview of Intellectual Property Rights and their various forms, with an in-depth explanation of patents and their role in safeguarding innovation. She elaborated on the relationship between intellectual property and innovation, emphasizing how effective IP strategies contribute to research translation and entrepreneurship. The talk was enriched with relevant case studies, offering practical insights into patent filing, protection, and management in real-world scenarios.

The event successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of IPR and patents, reinforcing the importance of intellectual property in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. By linking theoretical concepts with practical case studies, the session encouraged students to think innovatively, protect their ideas responsibly, and align their research and start-up aspirations with effective IP management practices.
