In the fast-evolving landscape of neurotechnology, Ria Rustagi stands as a visionary leader redefining how we understand and nurture brain health. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Neuphony, she blends cutting-edge science with human-centered purpose, driven by a deeply personal story. This first podcast interview, is a part of the Amity University Rekhi Foundation Centre for Science of Happiness—offers a rare glimpse into Ria’s entrepreneurial journey, her philosophy on happiness, and her vision for the future of brain-computer interfaces. From Personal Tragedy to Purpose-Driven Innovation Ria’s path into neurotechnology began with a life-altering event. Her sister’s diagnosis with a severe brain infection—and the eventual loss—sparked a determination to better understand brain health. “I was always exploring myself and always changing how I am and how I think,” she recalls. In 2021, alongside her husband, she launched Neuphony—often described as a “smartwatch for your brain.” This innovative EEG device and training platform not only helps users improve mental well-being but also works to reduce the stigma around brain health. Starting in Germany, Growing Across Borders The startup’s early days were far from glamorous. With only two founders in Germany, Ria relied on personal savings, consultancy work, and sheer persistence. The company’s incorporation was in India, but operations were managed remotely during the pandemic. This cross-cultural positioning shaped Neuphony’s DNA. “We built our company based on a mix of Indian and German entrepreneurship,” Ria says—fast-paced innovation from India, balanced with Germany’s meticulous research culture. Wellness at the Heart of the Workplace At Neuphony, mental health isn’t just a product—it’s part of the culture. Employees have access to an in-house neuropsychologist, regular yoga and meditation sessions, and wellness resources. “We prioritize mental health by providing resources like an in-house psychologist and wellness programs.” This philosophy extends to flexible leave policies, open-door communication, and even brainwave tracking for self-awareness. The Science of Change: Neuroplasticity Ria is a strong advocate of neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and grow through practice. She shares personal experiences of overcoming stage fright through years of public speaking, demonstrating how deliberate practice rewires the brain. Her vision for the future includes advanced brain-computer interfaces capable of thought recognition, helping individuals with mobility challenges communicate needs and emotions in real time. Leadership, Ethics, and Spirituality Ria’s leadership philosophy blends ethical decision-making with a purpose bigger than profit. When faced with opportunities to use Neuphony’s tech in competitive academic settings that might harm children’s mental well-being, she chose integrity over revenue. “It’s a dilemma between business opportunity and ethical leadership,” she admits. Spirituality, for her, is about leaving a legacy that honors her sister’s memory while helping others. Overcoming Stereotypes and Building Talent Being a young leader in a tech-driven industry came with its share of skepticism. But Ria sees hiring smarter people as a sign of strength, not insecurity. “Hiring smarter people allows us to embrace a culture of listening and healthy debate.” She believes that employee departures often signal deeper dissatisfaction—something leaders should address proactively. A Measured Approach to Mental Health as an Investment Ria emphasizes that spending on mental health should be valued as highly as physical health or lifestyle luxuries. Competing on quality, not just cost, has been key to Neuphony’s positioning in global markets. Happiness as a Leadership Priority For Ria, happiness is an inside job—rooted in self-awareness, mindfulness, and living in alignment with personal purpose. This belief shapes both her personal life and her leadership style. “Happiness comes from within; it is a self-help job.” She integrates mindfulness into her day, monitors her health metrics, and practices conscious self-talk to address thoughts rather than avoid them. Looking Ahead From EEG headbands to potential thought recognition systems, Neuphony is set on transforming how people interact with their own minds. At the core of this journey is Ria’s unwavering belief in balancing innovation, ethics, and human well-being. As she says: “Believe in your gut. If you follow others, you’ll build something that has already been built.” With that philosophy, Ria Rustagi is not just creating technology—she’s reshaping the future of mental health.
