Welcome Address by Prof Jitendra Singh
In India, the building construction industry produces the second largest amount of demolition waste and greenhouse gases (35-40%). The major consumption of energy in buildings is during construction and later in lighting or air-conditioning systems, which is bound to increase in the coming years. Thus, to reduce widespread damage to the environment, sustainable development is the need of the hour. India also in its INDC (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions) committed primarily to reduce emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35% by 2030 from 2005 levels; achieve about 40% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel based energy resources (mainly renewable like wind and solar power) by 2030; and to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.
