The Keynote Speaker for the forenoon session of the International Hybrid Conference themed ‘Building a Self-Reliant India-Convergence of Innovation Practices held on 22nd December was Mr.Song Kouk Thong. The topic on which he shared his thoughts was “Survival of the industries in Malaysia during the Covid-19.”

He discussed in his talk that the impact of Covid-19 is not limited to one or two countries, but it had a global attack. He also emphasized that Covid 19 is not an economic crisis, but it is social crisis. He threw light on how Malaysia dealt with this crisis and what were the major challenges on its way. According to him, one of the biggest changes that happened due to the pandemic was in education sector. The entire education system went online. But it was not as easy as it looks as there were many bottlenecks there. Limited access to internet, infrastructure constraint, student facing difficulties in communicating and gaining access to practical labs are some to name a few.

Mr. Shong highlighted that many organizations had to change their existing strategies as well diversify their businesses to sustain themselves during this crisis. He explained with the help of an example of organization named “AirAsia”. Since travel and tourism industry as well as airline industry was badly impacted due to closure of borders, AirAsia, primarily an airline organization diversified and entered into food delivery app business. Many travel agencies which had to close entered newer business segments, adapted to it and are now doing pretty well.

He concluded his talk by saying that this pandemic not a pandemic anymore. It has now taken the shape of endemic. It is going to stay with us now. So, industrialists, businesses and even individuals need to learn to adapt to this new normal. In his concluding remark, he also left few questions for academicians to ponder upon such as how can academicians use their expertise to help mitigate this burden in a suitable and a practical way.
