NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY (NDA)

Candidates for National Defense Academy are selected on merit basis through NDA exam. This All India test is held every year under the supervision of UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). Held twice a year, in the month of April and September. While applying, candidate should give his preference for the service that he desires to join.

NDA Written Exams are conducted twice a year i.e. in the month of April and September the notification for the exam is usually released in the months of December and May respectively.

ELIGIBILITY FOR NDA EXAM

  • Class 12/intermediate/10+2/ HSC from a recognized board in India with subject of Physics and Mathematics.
  • Candidates aged between 16 ½ and 19 ½ years of age as on first day of the month in which the course is to Commence.

NDA SYLLABUS

The exam will be divided into papers i.e. Paper I (Mathematics) Paper II (General Ability Test). General Ability Test will be further divided into two parts that include English and General Knowledge (INCLUDING SCIENCE).

SYLLABUS FOR ALL THE MENTIONED SUBJECT ARE GIVEN BELOW

  • Mathematics:- Algebra, Matrices & Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of Two & Three Dimensions, Different Calculus, Integral Calculus & Different Equations, Vector Algebra and Statistics & Probability.
  • English: - The English paper will be designed to test students’ proficiency in the languages with verbal reasoning and usage of grammar.
  • General Knowledge: - The GK paper will include subjects like Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography.
  • Current Events: - For all the mentioned subjects in the paper, the syllabus will be from 10+2 level.

NDA PREPARATION

For Mathematics paper, questions will be asked from 10+2 level. Hence, it is advisable that candidates should practice and solve questions from 10th to 12th class, working on key section such as Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry. Try to read newspapers daily to improve reading skills. English paper will broadly cover grammar, synonyms, antonyms and reading Comprehensions. With Physics, Chemistry and General Science, try to stick with the basics that have been taught from 10th to 12th class.

CDS Exams are conducted twice a year i.e. in the month of February and November and the notification for the exam is usually released in the months of October and June respectively.

CDS WRITTEN EXAM

Combined Defense Services (CDS) examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. Only candidates who are unmarried and have completed their graduation are eligible to sit for this exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective academies after an interview is conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

ELIGIBILITY FOR CDS 2015

AGE LIMIT, GENDER AND MARITAL STATUS:-

  • Indian Maritime Academy (IMA):- Unmarried Male aspirants aged between 18 and 22 years are eligible to apply.
  • Indian Naval Academy (INA):- Unmarried Male aspirants aged between 18 and 22 years of age are eligible to apply.
  • Indian Air force Academy (IAA):- Unmarried Male aspirants aged between 18 and 22 years of age are eligible to apply.
  • For Officers Training Academy (SSC Course for Men):- Unmarried/Married Male aspirants aged between 18 and 22 years of age are eligible to apply.
  • For Officers Training Academy [SSC Course for Women (Non-Technical)]:- Unmarried/Issueless Widows/Issueless Divorcees aged between 18 and 22 years of age are eligible to apply.
  • Please note that the date of birth recorded in the Matriculation/ Higher Secondary School Passing Certificate will be concerned as final.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

  • For IMA and Officer's Training Academy:- Degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
  • For Indian Naval Academy: - Engineering Degree from a recognized university or institution.
  • For Air Force Academy:- Degree from a recognized university (with Physics and Chemistry as subjects in 10+2) or Bachelor of Engineering. Students studying in the final year of degree course and are yet to pass the final degree examination are eligible to apply for CDS 2015. However they are required to submit the proof of passing degree examination to the respective headquarters of the service which they intend to apply for.

Indian Air Force conducts Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) for candidates to recruit them to Flying, Technical and Ground Duty Officer Branches. Graduates in all streams including B.E, B.Tech, B.Sc, M.Com, CA, and ICWA are eligible to apply for AFCAT 2015. Given below is a detailed stream-wise eligibility and when you can apply for AFCAT 2015 exam.

AFCAT SYLLABUS

  • General Awareness: History, Sports, Geography, Environment, Civics, Basic Science, Defence, Art, Culture, Current Affairs, Politics
  • Verbal Ability in English: Comprehension, Error Detection, Sentence Completion, Synonyms, Antonyms, Testing of Vocabulary
  • Numerical Ability: Decimal Fraction, Simplification, Average, Profit & loss, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Simple interest
  • Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test: Verbal Skills, Spatial Ability

AFCAT EXAM PATTERN

  • The AFCAT 2015 Question Paper will have 100 questions. All questions will be of three marks each.
  • For every correct answer you will get three marks and for every wrong answer one mark will be deducted under negative marking.
  • The total time allotted for the paper is two hours.

All applicants whose online applications have been successfully submitted will be called for Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) (applicable only for candidates applying for technical branch). EKT would be for 45 minutes and conducted immediately after AFCAT.

Candidates who are shortlisted on the basis of (AFCAT) will be called for further testing at one of the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) at Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar or Varanasi.

THE TESTING WOULD CONSIST OF THREE STAGES AS GIVEN BELOW.

  • Stage-I Test consisting of Intelligence Test along with other tests will be conducted on the first day. Stage-I test is a screening test and only those who qualify would undergo subsequent testing. All Stage-I qualified candidates would be subjected to document check to ascertain their eligibility for the branches applied for. Those candidates who either do not qualify in Stage I testing or do not meet the required eligibility criteria would be sent back on the first day itself.
  • Stage-II testing consisting of Psychological test, Group Tests and Interview will be conducted on subsequent days (Five Days).
  • For Flying Branch: Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) would be administered to eligible candidates.

Part II:- General Studies and Comprehension

Part-A – Essay questions are long answers which are to be answered in either Hindi or English totaling 80 Marks. The indicative topics are modern Indian history especially of the freedom struggle, geography, polity and economy, Knowledge of security and human rights issues, and analytical ability.

Part-B – Comprehension, précis writing, other communications/language skills – to be attempted in English only (Marks 120) The topics are Comprehension Passages, précis writing, developing counter arguments, simple grammar and Other aspects of language testing.
