SPECIAL SESSIONS

IEEE WIE UK and Ireland Track
The Role of Digital Technology to Support the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Date: Tuesday 9th May 2023

Time: 15:00-17:15

Venue: Amity University, 24 Bedford Square, Fitzrovia, London WC 1B, 3HN, UK

Digital technology could play a crucial role in supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were established in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Digital technology, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning (ML), is a promising enabler of these goals. For instance, IoT is widely used to avail medical care in remote areas or to take pro-active measures that improve the agriculture yield or even regulate responsible consumption and production. This session encourages new ideas that harness technological advancements toward the 17 UN-defined SDGs.

We invite researchers to contribute original and unique articles, as well as current review articles. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Innovative technology including IoT, ML, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Physical Systems, Digital Twin, Blockchain, for SDGs:
    • Sustainable transportation
    • Health and well-being
    • Clean water
    • Affordable energy
    • Climate action
    • Life below water and on land
    • Reducing inequality and promoting gender equality
  • Challenges of using technology in addressing SDGs:
    • Security
    • Data Privacy
    • Algorithmic bias
    • IoT Connectivity
    • Energy consumption
    • Other
  • Use cases that showcase the use of technology in solving SDGs

IEEE WIE UKI is dedicated to promoting female engineers and scientists and supporting them in their academic interests. To foster female representation and diversity,
