M. Pharm - Pharmaceutical Biotechnology :

Details of the Program

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is the therapeutic application of Biotechnology that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify the drugs from various sources as well as to help us in the area of disease diagnosis, tissue engineering and develop transgenic plants and animals with added therapeutic values. The main objective of this programme is to provide a balanced and comprehensive knowledge of the basic as well as applied aspects related to Pharmaceutical Biotechnology that would enhance the basic aptitude of each student and prepare them to take up the challenges in the varied and multi-faceted applications of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology in the area of drug development, drug discovery, disease diagnosis and prognosis.

It will empower the students with the latest tools, techniques and awareness in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and will facilitate comprehensive learning combining the scientific and technological aspects.

Programme Focus

The proposed academic programme has been formulated with an objective of advancing education and research in the area of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology with special emphasis on Pharmaceutical and Industrial biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Pharmacovigilance, Pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, drug discovery and nanobiotechnology. Hands-on training will be provided through commensurate bench-level training relating to the topics covered in each semester. The issues relating to scientific integrity and bioethical concern and importance of public awareness will also be covered. Additionally, the students will be acquainted with communication skills, behavioral sciences, foreign language and trained in effective scientific communication.

The focus in the third semester will shift to specialized courses. These have been designed to highlight how the application of fundamental knowledge from the pharmaceutical sciences, combined with genetic engineering tools, has addressed practical problems and furthered the expansion of basic knowledge as well. Courses have been specifically structured to impart concepts pertaining to advanced areas of research in pharmaceutical biotechnology and contemporary approaches employed by molecular biologist. The course entitled "Pharmacy laws, Pharmacotherapy & Regulatory Affairs" is the hallmark of the programme.

This course is included to sensitize the students to critical regulatory issues in field of pharmaceutical biotechnology. The students will additionally be trained in theoretical aspects relating to Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, which provide important data-analysis and -management tools in the post-genomic era. The student will be doing a major laboratory-based project in the emerging areas of pharmaceutical Biotechnology and the project duration will be for one year with synopsis formulation, review of literature and protocol standardization, major experimentation. The possible outcome will be patent, publications, thesis or dissertation etc and Dissertation.
