Amity University celebrates World Liver Day

Amity Institute of Molecular Medicine & Stem Cell Research (AIMMSCR), Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida Campus organized an insightful International Seminar on the theme, “Keep Your Liver Healthy and Disease Free”, to commemorate “World Liver Day”.

Deliberating upon “Therapeutic Implication in Acute and Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF)”, Dr. Ashok Choudhury, Hepatology and Liver Transplant Group, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, averred, “Wellness includes all aspects-emotional, physical, financial, spiritual, social and cultural. However, may times we ignore our health and do not pay attention to small ailments which my later lead to a big disease. The main liver problems are fatty liver which is a result of obesity, hepatitis which is caused by diabetes and cirrhosis caused mainly due to excessive alcohol consumption. Therefore, it is extremely essential to develop a healthy lifestyle, consume a good diet and exercise regularly to avoid any such problems.”

Sharing his views on the occasion, Dr Ashish Goyal, DKFZ German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland, stated, “The theme for this year's World Liver Day is – “Be Vigilant, Get Regular Liver Check-Ups and Prevent Fatty Liver Diseases”. The increase in the number of deaths every year caused due to liver diseases is alarming. There is a lack of awareness and people have very limited knowledge about the liver and the role it plays in our bodies. Therefore, World Liver Day, is a day to commit to a healthier lifestyle, diet,  getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness to reduce stress, avoiding alcohol and tobacco that can boost liver functioning and keep

liver diseases at bay.”

Emphasising upon the significance of early diagnosis, Prof Dhyan Chandra, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Centre Buffalo, New York, USA, opined, “According to recent studies, around 20 lakh people die due to liver diseases every year across the world – the numbers are expected to shoot up to a 35 percent increase by 2030. The functions of liver include production and excretion of bile, excretion of substances like bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones and metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. In many cases, patients do not look sick or feel weak at the initial stage and once the symptoms start appearing, it’s too late for proper treatment. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment is crucial in the case of liver diseases.

Highlighting the significance of the Seminar, Dr. B.C. Das, Chairman, Amity Institute of Molecular Medicine and Stem Cell Research (AIMMSCR), said, “The aim of this International Seminar is to raise awareness about liver diseases and Hepatitis by sharing information about liver diseases. Many people may be living with hidden liver diseases or hepatitis but are unaware of the same, and therefore, they are at a severe risk for health complications that can be fatal. All this is because of lack of knowledge and unawareness about hepatitis and reluctance to go for testing and vaccination widely available across the country.”

During the Seminar, the Research Scholars of AIMMSCR, Bornika Roy, Basundhara Das, Jaydev Pal, Prachi Sharma, Bharti Rakhecha and Shivani Jaiswal presented various insights and shared valuable information, for the benefit of the students and researchers and Prof. (Dr.) Subhrajit Biswas, Director, AIMMSCR, welcomed the guests on this occasion.
