First Batch of Students of MBA in Organic Agriculture and Food Business Proceed During Greener Pastures for Summer Placements

The Visionary person that he is, Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan,Founder President, Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Chairman, AKC Group of Companies could foresee that Organic Agriculture is going to be the most important factor in the second Green Revolution. This will require not only the technical knowledge about the Organic Agriculture but also management qualities to achieve the change over to organic farming. AMITY is the first institution in the country to start an MBA Programme in Organic Agriculture and Food Business.

Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan while blessing the students who are proceeding on summer training exhorted them to work whole heartedly on their assigned projects. He emphasized that Organic Agriculture not only required technical inputs but also large measure of managerial practices. The farmer has to be given easy access to the market to get remunerative prices for his produce. The food processing industry and the traders have to ensure that the entire organic produce is lifted promptly. It is here that the Amity Alumni will play a very constructive role. The summer training progaramme will commence from 1st June to 21st July, 2006.

Mr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor of the AUUP explained that India has to play a leading role in the Organic Agriculture Food and Business Management. The country has large tracts of land which can easily adopt Organic farming. He advised the students that during their field training, they should see how the role of Central and State governments including NGOs on one hand and the food processing industry on the other hand supplement their efforts.

Shri K.S. Bains, IAS (Retd.), Padma Shri highlighted the important factors of the syllabus and how the technical knowledge will help the students in their managerial entrepreneurship. Dr. J.N. Kaul, Director, AIOA also highlighted the facilities of Laboratories, Library and organic farm that have been set up for the benefit of the students.

Shri K.J. Singh, Vice Chancellor of AUUP assured that the university will continue its pioneers in the field of organic agriculture by adding more programmes as also the requisite facilities. Dr. Raj Singh, Pro-Vice Chancellor advised the students that summer placement is a very important part of their training and they should fully utilize this period for their benefit.

It may be mentioned that the current global market of the Organic Agriculture produce is of the order of 30 billion dollars and it is increasing at the rate of 15% annually. India’s share at present is less than 1%. It is Dr. Chauhan’s vision that India will soon play a leading role in Organic Agriculture and Food Business. The green revolution though served the country very well for food grain production but has exhausted the soil. Due to high doses of chemicals, fertilizers and insecticides, the levels of undesirable chemicals in various items of food is fast reaching unacceptable levels. It is only Organic Agriculture that will revitalize the soil and make possible sustainable agriculture and producing wholesome food.

The MBA programme started on 1st of September, 2005. It is very encouraging that in the very first year, 24 students enrolled and have completed their first year. The students came from all over the country including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Imphal, Gujarat, Kerala etc, besides those from the adjoining states. It is very encouraging to note that out of 24 students, 15 are girls.

AMITY in a very short time has established necessary infrastructure in terms of Laboratories, Library, Organic Farm and the like. In the model form, each student has been allotted a piece of land for which he/she has to do complete planning for crop rotation, do regular soil testing, record observations, interpret results to ensure the regeneration of soil in terms of microbial organisms besides the nutrient changes.
