Recently National Commission for Women (NCW) in collaboration with Amity Law School Noida conducted the Regional Law Review Consultation (Northern Region) on Laws Relating to Women Prisoners on 8th January 2025, under the advisory of Prof. (Dr.) D. K. Bandyopadhyay and under the esteemed leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Shefali Raizada, Director, ALSN. This prestigious, NCW-funded initiative was secured by Dr. Ekta Gupta, Associate Professor, and Dr. Pranav Tewari, Assistant Professor, ALSN.
The consultation was graced by Smt. Vijaya K. Rahatkar, Hon’ble Chairperson, National Commission for Women, accompanied by Mr. Manmohan Verma, Law Officer, and senior NCW officials. Sixteen distinguished resource persons—including State Women Commission Chairpersons, senior advocates, policy makers, and prison reform experts—participated in the consultation.
The day-long consultation provided a dynamic platform for critical discussions on the challenges and gaps in the current legal and correctional systems concerning women prisoners. Key issues discussed included gender-sensitive prison infrastructure, legal aid, undertrial welfare, maternal care, rehabilitation, and amendments required in state jail manuals. The deliberations were aimed at recommending systemic reforms and ensuring a human rights-based, gender-just prison administration.
Experts offered detailed recommendations for policy amendments, procedural reforms, and better implementation of existing laws. The event concluded with the submission of a comprehensive consultation report to the National Commission for Women for further consideration.
The consultation reinforced the need for gender-responsive correctional reforms and paved the way for constructive legal amendments in India’s prison systems. Amity Law School Noida expresses its sincere gratitude to NCW and all stakeholders for their valuable support in making this initiative impactful and solution oriented.
