Backdrop

The institutions of higher learning in India are facing crucial challenge in creating, nurturing and maintaining the level of quality research especially in social science, commerce, management studies, life sciences etc. The need of the hour is to develop a sound methodological base of research among the budding educationists and researchers to cope up with future challenges. A good research methodology is a key to sound research output. To operationalize this vision, there is a need to train, reorient and reactivate the research scholars, young faculty members, and practitioners in the social science on research methodology. The current workshop is an effort to enrich the scholars on research methodology.

About Workshop

The course seeks to acquaint the participants from different disciplines such as Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Education, Public Administration, Political Science, Population Science, Management Studies, Physical Education, Life sciences and other applied sciences etc. Increasingly in recent decades, Qualitative, Quantitative and mixed methods have gained currency with social and management researchers as trusted tools to deal with the intrinsic as well as the social, economic and cultural phenomena of interest to them. These methods yield insights about the causes and effects of, and solutions to, social problems. A common element in many of these methods is the engagement of the evaluator with human subjects, which opens up complex sets of issues. A competent researcher is expected to be adequately equipped to address these.

The course covers a gamut of themes from epistemology to the building blocks of research, including topics like a Primer, Arriving at Research Problem, Essentials in Data Collection and Analysis, Quantitative / Qualitative Methods with focus on Evaluation and Development, Designing of tools, Sampling Techniques, Econometrics etc. The workshop shall be conducted in both lecture and interactive mode. In addition to the interactive classroom lectures the participants will be introduced to the use of selected statistical packages like SPSS/STATA. They will also have the opportunity to discuss with the Resource Persons on their synopsis, issues relating to tools of data collection, interpretation of data, use of statistical tools and techniques, etc. depending upon the stage of progression of their research work. Those who are about to complete their research may get an opportunity to share their findings with their peers, faculty and invited experts so that they could incorporate worthy suggestions.

Objective of the Workshop

  • To enable the participants, define research problem, developing an approach to research problem and selection of suitable research design.
  • To impart capabilities for formulation and testing of hypothesis based on the nature of research.
  • To comprehend appropriateness of statistical software packages for analyzing research data.
  • To enable the participants to understand report writing and writing research proposals.
