ASCO trains students to be successful and skilled journalists and trains them together, create, evaluate, and present news and information. Journalism can be distinguished from other forms of communication, such as email, tweets, opinions, advertising, and propaganda, by certain characteristics. It provides verified information so readers or viewers can make informed decisions.

Journalism communicates and educates about changing events and issues. Professional journalists live by a code of ethics and standards, which includes truthfulness, objectivity, accuracy, fairness, and impartiality. Yet, while bias and objectivity are of primary importance, some forms of journalism, such as activism, have intentionally embraced a non-objective viewpoint, which is prevalent in much of today’s social media and blogs and other platforms meant to sway the public’s opinions.

A journalist might work on many issues, or choose to specialize in certain issues, such as a sports journalist or war journalist. Likewise, depending on the context, a journalist might also be an editorial writer, columnist, or photojournalist.As the field of journalism is very broad, a journalist may work in one or a variety of areas, such as a photojournalist and explore the world with a camera while documenting the events of our time. As a reporter he can conduct interviews, and then report on what news and events he or she finds, typically for newspapers, magazines or broadcasts. As a news editor he decides which news stories to publish or broadcast, and checks the stories beforehand for accuracy and fairness. A feature writer breaks away from writing and reporting hard news by telling stories in a more creative and compelling way. Technical writers/journalists communicate complex information to those who need it to accomplish a task or goal.

A foreign correspondent is responsible for reporting news about and from another country. Freelance journalists are self-employed, but have all the same responsibilities as a journalist who is employed by someone else or a company. Broadcast journalists report news electronically or by radio, and also includes television and the Internet. An investigative reporter investigates and reports on a single topic, such as political corruption or corporate wrongdoing. Sports journalists report on sporting news, events, and competitions Animation students through their coursework, may begin to build a professional portfolio of their work. They may also take specialized courses, such as design studios, to help them improve their skills in animation. Some of these courses may also cover portfolio presentation and self-marketing to help students find jobs after they graduate.

Upon graduation, students may look for employment with motion picture and video production companies, as well as advertising and public relations firms. Animators may also find work with software publishers and computer system design firms. With additional training, these professionals may also becomeSketch artists, Graphic designers, Painters, Cartoonists, Illustrators, Computer game developers, Computer game programmers, Visual artists, Web designers, and Multimedia designers.
