ONE OF THE LIMITATIONS OF CHLOROPLAST PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS THAT ABSORBED LIGHT IS CONSTRAINED TO THE VISIBLE RANGE OF SPECTRUM, WHICH IS ONLY ROUGHLY 50% OF THE INCIDENT SOLAR ENERGY RADIATION. MOREOVER, THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC APPARATUS GETS SATURATED BY LESS THAN 10% OF FULL SUNLIGHT. IF THE CAPACITY OF SOLAR LIGHT ABSORPTION BY THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENT CAN BE EXTENDED, THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC EFFICIENCY CAN BE IMPROVED. CORE SHELL NANOMATERIALS LIKE SILICA COATED NOBLE METAL NANOPARTICLES (GOLD AND SILVER) AND OPTO-ELECTRONICALLY ACTIVE SINGLE WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES AND NANO-TITANIUM DI OXIDE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO AUGMENT THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC EFFICIENCY. WE ARE CURRENTLY STUDYING THE EFFECT OF THESE NANOSTRUCTURES ON CHLOROPHYLL MEDIATED PHOTOSYNTHESIS. MOREOVER, MY LAB IS ALSO INTERESTED IN NANOMATERIAL MEDIATED SIRNA DELIVERY FOR GENE SILENCING IN INSECT VECTORS AND PESTS.
