Week-long Anti-Narcotic Awareness Campaign organized by Amity, to sensitize the Youth against “Substance Abuse”
Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida campus organized week-long Anti-Narcotic & Anti-Drugs Campaign, with an aim to sensitize the students and make them aware about Drug Abuse and Narcotics. As part of this campaign, an Expert Talk on the topic “The Neuroscience of Addiction & the Solution”, was organized, which focussed on understanding the neuroscience of addiction, the harmful effects of substance abuse, prevention, early intervention, and making informed and healthy choices. During the week-long campaign, an Anti-Drug Awareness Rally, Screening of Short Films regarding ill effects of consumption of narcotics, Yoga Sessions and Street Plays, were also organized to sensitize the students.
Addressing the students, Ms. Manisha Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, averred, “Drug abuse is a serious concern, and the Police encounters numerous cases of substance abuse on a daily basis. Narcotic substances can significantly alter the brain’s reward system by triggering excessive release of dopamine, gradually leading to dependence and addiction. Young people are particularly vulnerable to peer pressure and other influences that can push them towards substance abuse. Students must make conscious and healthy choices, build positive friendships, read, participate in sports and physical activities, and adopt constructive ways to manage stress. By choosing healthy sources of happiness and fulfilment, they can protect both their physical and mental well-being and contribute to a stronger nation.”
Sharing her views on the occasion, Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor Amity University Uttar Pradesh, stated, “Addiction begins in the mind and can have a profound impact on an individual’s physical and psychological well-being. As we work towards building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, our youth must remain healthy, focused and free from substance abuse. Addiction is a neurological condition, and timely counselling and support can play a vital role in helping individuals overcome it. At Amity, our Centre for Counselling provides students with the necessary guidance and support to address psychological challenges. I urge students to make healthy choices, stay away from drugs and invest their energy in positive pursuits, because a healthy and responsible youth is the foundation of a healthy and developed nation.”
Dr. Shweta Khurana, Distt Tobacco Officer, opined, “Peer pressure is one of the major factors that can lead young people towards substance abuse. The consequences of drug use go far beyond physical health—it can adversely affect mental well-being, education, career prospects and family relationships, causing immense stress and anxiety for parents. Drugs can never provide a path to success or fulfilment. I urge students to remain focused on their education, make responsible choices, surround themselves with positive influences and work towards achieving their goals, making themselves and their parents proud.”
Welcoming the guests, Dr. S.K. Srivastava, Vice President Amity Foundation for Developmental Disabilities, said that Amity University keeps organizing awareness programmes for the benefit of the students. Students are the brand ambassadors, and they should never fall in the trap of drugs since it ruins their entire life.
On this occasion, students took a Pledge to stay away from drugs and substance abuse.
