Research Interests
Perception of external cues helps in assessment of current environmental status which is vital for making decisions related to immediate survival and increasing fitness. By utilizing Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism, she aims to find out how sensory receptors/signaling molecules regulate perception of various environmental cues such as odor, diet or temperature and further modulate life span or development of age-related disorders. Her work showed that a chemosensory neuronal GPCR STR-2 is required at an organismal level for survival at a particular diet and temperature. It functions by modulating the level of lipid stores and lipid metabolic genes, especially the expression of MUFA producing delta-9 desaturases, differentially at different environmental conditions as per the physiological needs of the worm. The study explains the mechanism by which interplay of genetic and environmental factors regulate longevity and provide a model for identification of targets to increase life expectancy. Her current research interest is to investigate the regulation of aging and age-associated neurodegenerative diseases by sensory perception of external cues.
