“RELATIVITY AND BLACK HOLES OR HOW PHYSICISTS LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BLACK HOLES”

Black holes have been in the news in the past few years. In particular, when first gravitational waves were discovered in 2016 or when black hole images came in 2019. Black holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects in outer space. They are extremely dense with such strong gravitational attraction that even light cannot escape their grasp if it comes near enough. Black Holes are initially theoretically predicted by Einstein's General theory of Relativity which has come to occupy prominent place in astrophysics and in current attempts at quantizing general relativity and unification of forces.

Amity School of Applied Sciences organized the Webinar on the topic ‘Relativity and Black Holes OR How physicists learned to stop worrying and love the black holes’ on 3rd June 2020. The speaker, Dr. Yogesh K. Srivastava, Reader-F, NISER, Bhubaneswar, explained, what do we mean by the black hole, what are their special properties and how they came to dominate in physicists quest for still elusive theory of quantum gravity. Going beyond the pretty pictures of black holes, the complex concepts behind this beautiful and invisible object was explained in a very simple manner. This talk was of immense interest for the students and faculties. Prof. (Dr.) Asita Kulshreshtha (Head of the Institution), chaired the session. Dr. Pooja Srivastava was the convener for the lecture.
