“Acting is listening and reacting”, avers Celebrated Theatre and Screen Actor Ms. Vidushi Mehra, at Amity School of Film and Drama
Amity School of Film & Drama hosted an intensive two-day workshop, titled “Discover the Power of Presence,” by acclaimed Theatre and Screen Actor, Ms. Vidushi Mehra, known for her performances in “No One Killed Jessica” and “Raees”, and a renowned trainer in voice, expression, and communication. The workshop aimed to empower students to discover presence, authenticity and mindful expression.
The workshop began with a focus on diaphragmatic voice work, helping students understand breath support and the power of projection. This was followed by improvisation-based exercises that encouraged spontaneity, storytelling, and embodied performance. Ms. Vidushi Mehra guided participants through a series of exercises designed to deepen their connection with their voice and strengthen their expressive presence.
Sharing her valuable insights on acting and story-telling, Ms. Vidushi Mehra said, “Acting is listening and reacting since the characters respond to a different situations while acting. Emotions and connection are essential for storytelling. There should be a beginning, middle and an end to a story, just like the life-cycle of human beings from birth to death. Voice and speech are important aspects of communication since we communicate by our voice and speech. The relationships portrayed by different characters become the center of storytelling. What makes a story interesting is personal connection and emotions, wherein energy needs to be created through words, thoughts and actions. Stories often lose impact when they lack direction, also known as the “danger of spiralling without conclusivity.” She emphasized upon having a dynamic exchange between the internal and external worlds while acting and highlighted that acting is not merely expressive but also receptive.
The session concluded with an interactive session, wherein the students reflected on their performances and received personalized inputs on voice, gesture, and presence. By integrating theatre discipline with screen performance and life skills, Vidushi Mehra’s workshop offered ASFD students an inspiring and practical approach to performance — one that connects artistic technique with self-awareness, confidence, and authenticity.
