Amity School of Languages organized a workshop on "Las variedades lingüísticas de España" (i.e. Linguistic varieties of Spain) for the students, pursuing the Spanish language as a major in graduation or value-added foreign language course.

The workshop was aimed to provide the students an adequate understanding of linguistic variations found in the Iberian Peninsula, which will help the students to learn phonetic & morphological aspects of Spanish language in a better way.

Prof. Emilia Alonso Sameño (University of Ohio, US) began the session with a glimpse of linguistic status of various regions of Spain which included official languages, regional languages & dialects used in different parts of Spain. Thereafter, Prof. Emilia elaborated 4 major languages of Spain, i.e. Castellano (Español), Gallego, Catalán (Valenciano) & Vasco (Euskara). She also specified the essential linguistic features of these languages. Involving the participants in the session,

Prof. Emilia Alonso Sameño also spoke on the linguistic scenario in India, and later she carried out an activity of learning cardinal numbers 0-10 in the above-mentioned four languages of Spain. Prof. Emilia also talked about the growing use of Spanglish (a mixed form of Spanish & English) by the native speakers & influence on different languages of Spain owing to its geographical proximity with neighboring countries, e.g. influence of French language on Catalán, Portuguese on Gallego, etc.

Prof. Emilia Alonso Sameño concluded the workshop with her observations on the significance and applicability of Sanskrit (Devbhasha) in the European language classrooms for better learning outcomes.
