Vice Chancellor Lecture Series: AI in Business – Today, Tomorrow & Beyond
The Entrepreneurship Cell of Amity University Mumbai, in collaboration with Amity Business School, hosted an insightful edition of the Vice Chancellor Lecture Series on April 16, 2025, on the theme “Leveraging AI for Business Growth and Innovation”. The event brought together students, faculty, and thought leaders to explore how Artificial Intelligence is transforming the business landscape across industries.
The session began at 11:15 AM, with a warm welcome and the felicitation of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Dr. A.W. Santosh Kumar Sir, followed by the felicitation of Guest Speaker, Mr. Shuvam Misra, an expert in AI-driven digital innovation.
Prof. (Dr.) Bhawna Sharma delivered the welcome address, introducing the significance of AI in today’s business environment. She set the stage for a powerful keynote that promised to unravel both the practical applications and philosophical questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence.
The keynote session by Mr. Shuvam Misra began at 11:17 AM, centered around “AI in Business Applications”. Quoting a Harvard blog, he remarked:
“AI is bigger than electricity, bigger than the internet.”
This statement captured the transformative nature of AI, likening its impact to historic revolutions—from the printing press, electricity, and automobiles to the computer, internet, and mobile phones—culminating in today’s AI revolution.
Mr. Misra explained how AI automates routine tasks, uncovers actionable insights from complex datasets, and revolutionizes user experiences through tools like facial recognition, gesture tracking, and eye movement analytics.
He emphasized that not everything touted as AI actually qualifies as such. For instance:
· Algorithms ≠ AI
· Google Maps, recommendation engines, and robot vacuums don’t require AI, but adaptive behavior or rules engines.
He clarified what true AI entails: a model-based engine that learns, involving two key processes: learning and traversing (or querying) the model.
The session also highlighted the evolution from rules to intelligence:
· Stage 1: Traditional rules (if-then statements)
· Stage 2: Rules engines with data-based logic
· Stage 3: AI models with no pre-written rules, only learned patterns
The audience gained exposure to real-world AI applications such as:
· Voucher verification
· News summarization and report analysis
· Test case generation for software QA
· DigiYatra and smart travel
· Optometric diagnostics
· Anomaly detection and sentiment analysis
Mr. Misra also touched upon the ethical and operational challenges of AI:
· Hallucinations in AI-generated content
· Non-deterministic behavior
· Blurred lines between data analysis and decision-making
· Data segmentation and separation issues
· Loss of human accountability
He posed deeper questions around the nature of AI and human ambition:
· Does AI need sentience?
· Why are we so eager to hand over critical processes to machines?
The lecture concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where students actively raised questions about AI’s future, ethical design, and its implications for employment, entrepreneurship, and governance. Mr. Misra responded with thought-provoking insights, encouraging students to become informed and ethical drivers of AI innovation in India.
The Vice Chancellor Lecture Series once again stood out as an intellectually rich initiative, aligning with Amity University Mumbai’s mission to equip students with futuristic knowledge and responsible innovation.
