A Guest Lecture on “Endangered Indigenous languages in India : Sociolinguistic challenges and strategies revitalization” was organised by ASLA on 4th August 2026. The session aimed to highlight the significance of linguistic diversity and its role in preserving cultural heritage, while exploring effective strategies for the preservation, documentation, and revitalization of indigenous languages.
The aim of the guest lecture was to create awareness among students about the critical condition of endangered indigenous languages in India and to help them understand the sociolinguistic challenges contributing to language endangerment. It also sought to encourage research-based academic discussion, critical thinking, and student engagement with issues concerning language and society.
The guest lecture delivered by Prof. S. R. Sharma, Retd. HoD, Department of Linguistics, Deccan College, Pune, provided students with valuable research-based insights into the challenges surrounding endangered indigenous languages in India. The session enhanced their understanding of the impact of globalization and modernization on linguistic diversity, as well as the importance of language documentation and digital preservation. Discussions on government and institutional initiatives, education, and community involvement highlighted practical approaches to language protection and revitalization. Overall, the session encouraged students to engage critically with issues of language endangerment and strengthened their appreciation of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.
