Current Issues and Challenges in Indian Agriculture

Events

The webinar on Current Issues and Challenges in Indian Agriculture aimed to help students to understand the critical role of agriculture in India’s economic development and structural transformation. The session enabled students to understand the theoretical linkages between agriculture, rural development, and structural transformation through classical and contemporary economic frameworks. The resource person provided students a clear, fact-based picture of the scale and performance of Indian agriculture, based on the latest data from the Economic Survey 2025-26 and other official sources.

The address was followed by an interactive question-answer session where several questions were asked from the students and research scholars. The session ended with a vote of thanks.

As an outcome, participants were able to critically examine the major challenges facing by the agricultural sector, including land fragmentation, low and unstable farm incomes, under-investment in agricultural research, depletion of natural resources and an incentive system which subsidizes inputs but implicitly taxes output. The event helped participants understand more about the transition needed from just production to prosperity and linking classroom learning to SDG 8, i.e., Decent Work and Economic Growth.
