Versatile Role of Biotechnology: From Basic Science to Industrial Applications

Biotechnology is a versatile branch and refers to a plethora of emerging technologies which may be applicable in diverse industry sectors. It provides entirely new opportunities for sustainable utilization of existing and new products and services. Industries which previously never thought biological sciences may influence their business are exploring novel ways of using biotechnology for their benefit. Recognizing its importance, many countries are now emphasizing on formulating and implementing plans for using latest biotechnological interventions for industrial innovation and also creating new job opportunities and social progress.

Environmental concerns also impel the use of biotechnology, as vast potential of microorganisms and plants can be exploited to sequester pollutants from the environment leading to its restoration and conservation. This role will also expand substantially in the future as new methods are being developed for the bioremediation of all kinds of industrial effluents.
