Guest Lecture on “The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022” Organized by Amity Law School

Amity Law School organized a Guest Lecture Series on 15 March 2023 on the topic "The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022" with the objective of sensitizing and spreading awareness amongst the Faculty Members and Students regarding the proposed Data Protection Law in India. The lecture was delivered by Ms. Niyati Ojha, Legal Counsel at HP Inc., India, and attended by 149 students and 13 Faculty Members. Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd), Prof. & Director, ALS, Dean Faculty of Law was also present.

Ms. Niyati began her lecture by explaining the current regulatory landscape in India governing data privacy and protection and the challenges faced by the Information Technology Act, 2000. She further explained the meaning of Data, Personal Data, Data Fiduciary and Data Principal assigned by the proposed Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022. Ms. Niyati traced the development of Data Protection Laws and reiterated the need for enacting a strong Law for the protection of the rights of individuals vis-à-vis their personal sensitive data and its usage. The session was interactive, with participants raising queries and engaging in healthy discussions on the positives and negatives of the proposed Law.

Maj. Gen. P.K. Sharma (Retd) welcomed the gathering and enlightened them about the importance of data in today's digitized world and the need for the regulation of the use and protection of such data. He also praised Ms. Niyati for bringing laurels to the Law School and being an inspiration for the students. The session concluded with Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Monica Yadav, who highly appreciated the efforts of Ms. Niyati in sensitizing the participants and thanked Maj. Gen. P. K. Sharma (Retd) for sparing his valuable time to make the Event successful.

In conclusion, the Guest Lecture Series on "The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022" was successful in achieving its objective of sensitizing and spreading awareness amongst the Faculty Members and Students regarding the proposed Data Protection Law in India. Ms. Niyati's lecture provided valuable insights into the current regulatory landscape in India governing data privacy and protection and the need for enacting a strong Law for the protection of the rights of individuals vis-à-vis their personal sensitive data and its usage. The interactive session was a platform for healthy discussions and deliberations on the positives and negatives of the proposed Law, which helped in enhancing the understanding of the participants on the topic.
